Twilight Blessing

For the Ursuline Nuns in New Mexico

By Anne Wilson - La Mesa, California, USA - 21 November 2014

We blessed the house and garden

with our incense and songs,

five women carrying candles.

Even the cat stood quietly

and the birds were stilled.

Five women offering words of praise

at twilight, carrying embers

of our days. Later, we spoke

of common concerns,

our words like berries

that we swallowed whole

in silent communion.

There in the garden, we blessed

the adobe walls, artesian spring,

yet it was we who felt ourselves blessed,

gathered to the sacred breast

of creation, stilled in the gentian peace

of twilight rest.
