The Sacramental Cat

By James Como - New York, New York, USA - Ordinary Time/All Saints 2011

My cat kept me good today.
I was about doing evil
when, sprawled on my chest
(always a good sign),
this uncommon familiar
looked me in the eye.

"Only do your best.
For now just tickle that ear,
my belly too I think. Why,
I love you so heartily I must
kiss your hand, and blink."

So I became joyous and grateful,
suddenly, the way sacraments work.
Who knows the ways of eternity?

But Eternity knows us well.
My cat brought me good today.
She kept me out of Hell.
