Remembrances Observed
By Ann Applegarth - Roswell, New Mexico, USA - 27 August 2015
I think I'll sleep
in Pioneer Cemetery
next December
in a parka from
St. Vinnie's and a
down bag from REI --
brown to match the earth,
lest I be detected by
those I come to watch:
blue-eyed children wearing
love-knit sweaters of crimson
and holly green with star motifs
outlined in thread of silver.
Just once I want to
see the family come,
see smiles and wreaths,
the small tree clutched
in chubby hands.
Just once I want to
hear the father
tell again the tales of
those too dear to ever die.
